Living in Taiwan

Hello, I’m Nurul now I'm living in Taiwan and it’s been one year I am here. so I’d like to explain to you about Taiwan.

Taiwan or the Republic Of China (ROC) is a small island country located in East Asia and the capital city is Taipei. Mandarin is the primary language used in business and education, and Traditional Chinese is used as the writing system. Taiwan is one of the “four Asian tigers” alongside Hong Kong, South Korea, and Singapore. Taiwan has 4 seasons. There are spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The winter season starts from November until February.

In Taiwan, most people working in industrial companies such as electronic companies, food companies, and etc. half of the Taiwanese work as businessmen, fishermen, and farmers.

Taiwan is more than Taipei 101. Taipei 101 is the tallest building in Taiwan and the second tallest building in the world. besides that, Taiwan best know for these things, there are:

  • Computer, Taiwan is home of two giants industry laptops there are ASUS and ACER.

  • Night Markets, Here Taiwanese are bustling hives of activity, and practically every neighborhood has one. Food, clothes, oddly shaped cakes, toys, and games – the Taiwanese night market has them all and then some.

  • Bicycles, Taiwan is home to both Merida and Giant Bicycle manufacturers.

  • HTC Smartphones

  • Chinese artifact / Taiwan National Palace Museum

  • Tea and Pearl milk tea or bubble tea is fast becoming a favorite drink all over the world, and it all started right here in Taiwan.

  • Beef Noodles is Taiwan’s most famous food.

In Taiwan, one of the things I like is transportation. Because Taiwan provides trains such as HSR (High-Speed Rail), MRT (Must Rapid Transit), Local train, or TRA. Besides that Taiwan also provides bus and taxi, where every bus has route services in every city. Taiwan’s transportation already connects with the easy card, which is the card we use for transport payment or buy something in a convenience store and we can refill money at the convenience store like 7-11, Family Mart, Hi-life, etc.

Living in Taiwan, we have to know about what Taiwanese do and don’t. There are things Taiwanese people don’t: shake hands or greet each other, eat using a spoon and a fork, eat spicy food, lateness, noise in public transport. Taiwanese do; eat using chopsticks, use a face mask when they get sick or use public transport, wearing sport shoes, make a line. There are a few things Taiwanese do and don’t.

Taiwan is also famous for scenic sights, urban settings such as the night markets there are Ximending and Jiufen.

Ximending has been called the “Harajuku of Taipei” and “Shibuya of Taipei”. This place is the source of Taiwan's fashion, subculture, and Japanese culture. Because the Taiwan government legalizes marriage of the same gender, Ximending also has clubs and pubs, the gathering place for LGBT.

Jiufen is The village once was the gold city of Asia and called little Shanghai or little Hong Kong. Several movies chose to shoot here and the movies won international acknowledgment. For example, the film "A City of Sadness" has won first prize at the Venice Film Festival and awakened people's memory of Jiufen. It seems that the prosperous old streets, buildings, mines, and glamorous gold. The place is whispering its golden past. Now, there are many unique teahouses in Jiufen to stop during a visit to this mountain village, with a beautiful ocean view of the Keelung outer sea.
